The relations between Indonesia and Tajikistan, spanning 32 years, continue to grow alongside expanding opportunities for economic and manufacturing collaboration. As one of the largest industrial hubs in Southeast Asia, Indonesia possesses strengths in the automotive, electronics, textiles, and resource-based processing industries. On the other hand, Tajikistan is actively promoting the development of mineral-based industries, aluminum, textiles, and new technologies.

This complementary potential formed the basis of discussion during a bilateral meeting between the Director General of Industrial Resilience, Regions and International Access (KPAII) of the Indonesian Ministry of Industry and the Deputy Minister of Industry and New Technologies of the Republic of Tajikistan, Aziz Nazar, at the BRICS Forum on Partnership on New Industrial Revolution (PartNIR) 2026 in Xiamen, China.

Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita emphasized that international cooperation is a vital element in strengthening the competitiveness of the national industry amid global economic dynamics. "Industrial collaboration between countries must be continuously strengthened to encourage innovation, expand market access, and create investment opportunities that provide added value for both sides," the Minister said in a press statement in Jakarta (2/6).

The meeting took place on the sidelines of BRICS PartNIR 2026, a forum that brings together member and partner countries of BRICS to strengthen synergy in manufacturing, innovation, technology, and investment. Indonesia's participation in this forum also serves as an opportunity to expand its partnership network with various countries, including Tajikistan, which is considered to have a strategic position in Central Asia.

In recent years, the economic relations between the two countries have shown positive development. The trade value between Indonesia and Tajikistan increased from USD 1.7 million in 2021 to USD 1.9 million in 2025, with the main contribution coming from the non-oil and gas sector. This achievement reflects that there is still significant room for broader cooperation, both in trade and industrial development.

During the bilateral meeting, both parties discussed several cooperation opportunities with the potential to strengthen the industrial partnership between Indonesia and Tajikistan. Indonesia views Tajikistan as an important partner and a potential gateway to expand the reach of national manufactured products to the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region. Indonesian products that have currently entered the Tajikistan market include soaps and cleaning products, palm oil and its derivatives, textiles, paper, pharmaceuticals, coffee, tea, and spices.

Director General of KPAII of the Ministry of Industry, Tri Supondy, stated that strengthening relations with partner countries is part of efforts to build wider industrial connectivity while creating new opportunities for national businesses. "We continue to encourage the creation of mutually beneficial partnerships through the expansion of industrial networks, increased investment, and the development of cooperation capable of providing added value to both countries," he said during the bilateral meeting in Xiamen (28/5).

In addition to exploring trade and investment opportunities, both sides also discussed the follow-up on the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the industrial field proposed by Tajikistan. The discussion focused on refining the scope of cooperation to cover sectors that are more relevant to the needs and potential of each country.

Indonesia and Tajikistan also identified several areas with potential for collaboration, including the development of critical mineral supply chains, the pharmaceutical and medical device industries, and the halal industry ecosystem. These three sectors are considered to have promising prospects and can provide economic benefits to both parties.

The meeting was also utilized as a momentum to introduce Indonesia's participation as a Partner Country at the INNOPROM International Industrial Exhibition 2026, which will be held on July 6–9, 2026, in Yekaterinburg, Russia. Indonesia's involvement in the largest industrial exhibition in the Eurasian region is expected to further promote national manufactured products while opening new partnership opportunities with industrial players and investors from various countries.

Through constructive dialogue, Indonesia and Tajikistan reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening economic relations that have been established for over three decades. Both countries are optimistic that these steps will build the foundation for concrete cooperation supporting sustainable industrial growth and economic development.
