Indonesia Strengthens Industrial Diplomacy Through Palm Bioenergy Innovation in Russia
8 ИЮЛЯ 2026 Г.
The Government of Indonesia utilized the Indonesia-Russia Business Forum at the INNOPROM 2026 event in Yekaterinburg, Russia, as part of efforts to strengthen industrial diplomacy through the development of palm oil-based bioenergy. The forum, themed "Palm Oil and the Future of Sustainable Energy," became a vessel to introduce national industrial innovations while simultaneously opening opportunities for investment cooperation, trade, and technology development with Russia as well as countries in the Eurasian region.
"Indonesia has great potential to become a main player in the development of palm oil-based bioenergy through cooperation with Russia and Eurasian countries. Through innovation, downstreaming, and international cooperation, we want to make the palm oil industry not only an driver of the national economy, but also as part of the solution toward energy security and sustainable industrial development," said the Minister of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita in his statement in Russia (8/7).
Indonesia's participation in the forum reflects the government's commitment to expand market access for the national industry through international collaboration. Amid the world's increasing need for cleaner energy, Indonesia offers its industrial experience and capacity in developing palm oil-based bioenergy as a mutually beneficial cooperation opportunity for both countries.
The forum, which was attended by more than 100 industry leaders, government officials, business actors, and visitors of INNOPROM 2026, became a dialogue space between Indonesian and Russian industrial actors to exchange experiences, build business networks, and explore investment and technology development opportunities in the bioenergy sector.
On the same occasion, the Director General of Resilience, Regionalization, and International Industrial Access (KPAII) of the Ministry of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia, Tri Supondy, said the forum became an important opportunity to show that the transformation of Indonesia's palm oil industry has developed far beyond its role as an export commodity. "This forum is very good and is a valuable opportunity to convey that Indonesia is not only heading toward cleaner and more sustainable energy, but also continues to innovate through the superior products of the national industry," said Tri at Ekaterinburg Expo, Russia.
As the largest palm oil producer in the world, Indonesia utilized the forum to show the readiness of its industry in supporting the global energy transition. One of the steps explained was the implementation of the B50 biodiesel mandate which began to take effect in July 2026. This program mandates the use of diesel fuel containing 50 percent biodiesel made from palm oil raw material, thereby being able to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels, strengthen national energy security, and suppress carbon emissions.
Indonesia also introduced various policies that support the sustainability of the palm oil industry, starting from smallholder plantation rejuvenation programs, increasing human resource capacity, to technology development in the biodiesel industry and its derivative products through the Indonesia Plantation Fund (IPF). Besides that, the implementation of the Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) certification system continues to be strengthened so that Indonesian palm oil production meets global sustainability standards and becomes increasingly competitive in the international market.
The Director of Legal Affairs and Institutional Cooperation of the Palm Oil Plantation Fund Management Agency (BPDPKS), Pangihutan Siagian, said the success of the national biodiesel program shows that the development of the palm oil industry can run hand in hand with the energy transition and sustainable development agenda. According to him, BPDPKS's support also covers smallholder plantation rejuvenation programs, human resource development, research and innovation, as well as the construction of plantation facilities and infrastructure to strengthen the competitiveness of Indonesia's palm oil industry from upstream to downstream.
In addition to promoting bioenergy innovation, the forum also became momentum to expand Indonesia's economic cooperation with Russia. One opportunity that surfaced is the strengthening of trade relations through the completion of a free trade agreement between Indonesia and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). With Russia's position as one of the main partners in the region, collaboration in the bioenergy sector is expected to be an entry point for the development of industrial cooperation, investment, technology transfer, and the expansion of market access for Indonesian manufactured products.
Through the Indonesia-Russia Business Forum at INNOPROM 2026, Indonesia affirms that palm oil-based bioenergy innovation is not only part of the national energy transition strategy, but also an instrument of industrial diplomacy to build a closer partnership with Russia. By combining the strengths of innovation, sustainability, and international collaboration, Indonesia hopes to create new opportunities for industrial growth while strengthening its position as a strategic partner in the Eurasian region.
